SRX719685: Examination of the Rumen Bacteria and Methanogenic Archaea of Wild Impalas (Aepyceros melampus melampus) from Pongola, South Africa
1 LS454 (454 GS FLX Titanium) run: 10,539 spots, 3.5M bases, 2.2Mb downloads

Design: Whole rumen contents sampled from impala from Pongola, South Africa. Genomic DNA was extracted via the repeated bead-beating plus column method and the V1-V3 region of the 16S rRNA was amplified with archaea specific primers, Met86F,Met471R.

The present study explored the rumen bacteria and methanogens present in whole rumen digesta samples from five male impala from Pongola, South Africa. The main objectives were to compare and contrast the diversity and density of the impala rumen microbiota to those previously described from domesticated and wild ruminants. To achieve this goal, microbial DNA was extracted from the digesta samples, the 16S rRNA genes was amplified via PCR, and sequenced by Roche 454-pyrosequencing.
Sample: 16S archaeal amplicon (V1-V3)
